EigenLayer

EigenLayer is an Ethereum protocol that enables “restaking” — allowing ETH stakers to opt in to also securing additional decentralized services (Actively Validated Services, or AVSs) using the same staked ETH, earning additional rewards in exchange for accepting additional slashing risks.

Instead of every new decentralized service (oracle networks, data availability layers, bridges, sidechains) needing to bootstrap its own validator security from scratch, AVSs can leverage Ethereum’s existing validator security through EigenLayer. Restaking via EigenLayer enables developers to leverage Ethereum’s existing economic security infrastructure — its validator set and staked ETH — to bootstrap new Actively Validated Services from day one.

Users can restake directly via native restaking (32 ETH validators) or through LST restaking (depositing stETH, rETH, and other liquid staking tokens into EigenLayer). A third option, Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs), issued by protocols like Ether.fi and Puffer, allow users to gain EigenLayer exposure without running their own validator infrastructure.

EigenLayer Architecture

Traditional Security Bootstrapping:
New Protocol X needs security
→ Must issue tokens
→ Recruit validators
→ Build validator set
→ Years of bootstrapping + uncertain security

EigenLayer Restaking:
Ethereum validators (or LST holders)
        ↓
Opt in to EigenLayer
        ↓
Choose AVSs to support (additional slashing accepted)
        ↓
Earn AVS rewards (tokens + ETH)

Protocol X (AVS):
→ Uses EigenLayer security pool
→ Pays validators for participation
→ Inherits Ethereum economic security immediately

Restaking Types:
Native Restaking:
32 ETH validator → Sets withdrawal credentials to EigenLayer
Earns: Ethereum staking rewards + AVS rewards

LST Restaking:
  Deposit stETH/rETH into EigenLayer contracts
Earns: Liquid staking yield + AVS rewards

LRT (Liquid Restaking Token):
  Ether.fi, Renzo, Puffer
→ Issue tokens representing EigenLayer positions
→ Enables restaking without native validator infrastructure

FAQ

Q: What are the risks of restaking through EigenLayer?

Restaking adds slashing risk: if an AVS you are securing triggers slashing conditions — due to malicious behavior or configuration errors — your staked ETH can be slashed on top of normal Ethereum validator slashing risk. The more AVSs you opt into, the more independent slashing risks accumulate. Each additional AVS increases complexity and, by extension, slashing vulnerability — a mistake in one AVS environment could ripple across others. Ledger EigenLayer’s slashing mechanisms are designed to be conservative to mitigate cascading risk, though the system only went live on mainnet in April 2025.

Q: What is EigenDA?

EigenDA is EigenLayer’s flagship AVS — a data availability layer that launched alongside EigenLayer’s Stage 2 mainnet on April 9, 2024. Eth2book It allows rollups to post transaction data to EigenDA validators at lower cost than posting directly to Ethereum, while inheriting Ethereum-grade security through restaked ETH. Mantle Network is among the largest early EigenDA users.

Q: What is the EIGEN token and how does it differ from ETH?

The EIGEN token introduces a concept called “intersubjective slashing” — slashing for behaviors that are harmful but difficult to prove cryptographically (such as data withholding by a data availability layer). EIGEN holders can fork the EIGEN token to slash misbehaving AVSs, with the market determining which fork is legitimate. This creates a governance mechanism for edge cases that on-chain smart contract logic cannot handle automatically. EIGEN staking and delegation became available in May 2024, filling a complementary role within EigenLayer’s staking system. CoinDesk

Q: What is EigenCloud?

EigenCloud is the protocol’s evolved vision beyond restaking. It represents a pivot toward verifiable offchain compute infrastructure, with EigenCompute mainnet alpha launching in January 2026. OKX The goal is to become a “verifiable cloud” layer — enabling trustless computation and AI agent verification on top of EigenLayer’s security infrastructure.

UPay Tip: EigenLayer restaking offers additional yield on already-staked ETH, but the risk profile is meaningfully different from simple staking. Before restaking through liquid restaking tokens (Ether.fi, Renzo), understand: (1) which AVSs your restaked ETH is securing and their slashing conditions — slashing is now live on mainnet, (2) the LRT protocol’s own smart contract risk, and (3) the liquidity of your LRT if you need to exit. For conservative ETH holders, native Ethereum staking via Lido or Rocket Pool remains lower risk; for yield-maximizing DeFi users, EigenLayer restaking offers premium yields with proportionally higher risk exposure.
