Thousands of crypto projects launch every year. Most of them fail. Some fail slowly, running out of funding after two or three years of minimal progress. Others collapse fast, the team disappears, the price drops to zero, and investors lose everything. A small number go on to build real products that millions of people use.

This article walks through every layer of that research process. It covers what to look for, what to ignore, and the specific questions that separate well-built projects from ones that exist only on paper.

Comprehensive crypto evaluation

The white paper is where most serious research begins. A white paper is the project’s founding document. It explains what the project does, why it needs to exist, how the technology works, and how the token fits into the system. Reading it carefully tells you more about a project than any social media post or analyst report.

A good white paper makes a clear argument. It identifies a specific problem, explains why existing solutions do not solve it adequately, and describes in concrete terms how this project solves it differently. 

It gives enough technical detail for someone with relevant knowledge to assess whether the approach is sound. It is honest about limitations and trade-offs.

A bad white paper does the opposite. It uses vague language that sounds technical without saying anything specific. 

Phrases like “harnessing cutting-edge blockchain infrastructure to disrupt legacy financial systems” carry no information. They are designed to create an impression of sophistication without committing to anything that can be verified or tested.

Look at how the white paper handles the technical architecture. Does it explain the consensus mechanism? Does it describe how the network handles scalability, security, and decentralisation, the three properties that blockchain systems constantly trade off against each other? Does it acknowledge these trade-offs honestly or pretend they do not exist?

Also, read the economic section carefully. How are tokens distributed? What is the total supply? Are there inflation mechanisms? How does the project generate revenue, and does the token capture any of that value?

Ethereum’s original white paper from 2013 is a useful benchmark. It was technically detailed, acknowledged trade-offs, and made falsifiable predictions about what the platform could and could not do. Compare any project’s white paper to that standard and you will quickly see whether the team is communicating substance or performing it.

Assess the Team

The team is often the single most important factor in whether a project succeeds or fails. Technology can be rebuilt. Markets can shift. But a team that lacks the skills or the integrity to execute will run a project into the ground regardless of how good the idea is.

Start with LinkedIn and public records. Are the founders who they claim to be? Have they worked in the roles they describe? A co-founder who claims to have led engineering at a major tech company should have a verifiable history, like colleagues who can confirm the work, projects that were publicly announced, and code that was committed under their name. This takes time to verify but it is worth doing for any significant investment.

Look at their relevant experience. Crypto projects require a combination of technical depth, product sense, business development ability, and regulatory awareness. 

A team of PhDs with no product experience will struggle to build something people actually use. A team of marketers with no technical foundation will struggle to build something that actually works. The best founding teams have both, or know how to hire for what they lack.

Check for any history of previous projects. Did the founders work on earlier crypto ventures? If those projects failed, that is not automatically disqualifying; failure is part of how people learn in a new industry. But it matters how they failed. 

Did they return investor funds when possible? Did they communicate clearly as the project struggled? Did they take responsibility or disappear? Past conduct is the strongest signal of future conduct.

Anonymous teams often present a specific challenge. Some legitimate projects operate with pseudonymous founders. Bitcoin itself was created by Satoshi Nakamoto, whose real identity remains unknown. But an anonymous team is a higher-risk situation because there is no personal accountability if things go wrong.

Look at advisors carefully, too. Many projects list prominent names in crypto or finance as advisors, but the actual involvement of those advisors varies enormously. 

Some are genuinely engaged, attending regular calls and contributing strategic guidance. Others signed on for a token allocation and have had no contact with the project since.

You do not need to be a software engineer to evaluate a crypto project’s technology, but you do need to understand the basics of what the project is building and whether its technical claims are plausible.

Start with the main question: Does this project actually need a blockchain? Blockchain technology is useful for specific things, creating systems where multiple parties who do not trust each other need to agree on a shared state without a central authority. 

It is genuinely better than traditional databases for those use cases. For everything else, it adds complexity, cost, and speed limitations without a corresponding benefit.

If a project’s blockchain use-case is primarily about creating a token to sell to investors, the blockchain is not solving a technical problem; it is creating a financial instrument. That is a very different thing, and the evaluation changes accordingly.

For projects that genuinely need blockchain technology, look at the consensus mechanism. Proof of work, proof of stake, delegated proof of stake, proof of history, and various hybrid systems each have different security, decentralisation, and throughput characteristics. 

A project’s choice of consensus mechanism should show the requirements of what it is building. A high-frequency trading platform needs throughput that proof of work cannot provide. A system handling high-value, infrequent settlements might prioritise security over speed. Ask whether the choice makes sense for the stated use case.

Look at the code. Most legitimate blockchain projects make their code open-source on GitHub. An open repository with regular commits, detailed commit messages, multiple contributors, and active issue tracking is a positive sign. 

A repository with a few commits from six months ago, no recent activity, and a single contributor is a warning sign that either the development has stalled or the project is not actually building what it claims.

Check whether the project has commissioned security audits from reputable firms. Smart contract code handles real money, and bugs in that code can lead to exploits that drain user funds in minutes. 

Reputable audit firms include Trail of Bits, Consensys Diligence, Certora, and Halborn. An audit does not guarantee safety. Even audited code has been exploited, but the absence of any audit on a project handling significant user funds is a serious concern. Read the audit reports themselves, not just the summaries. What did auditors flag? How did the team respond?

Layer 2 projects and cross-chain bridges deserve extra scrutiny. Bridges, the technology that allows assets to move between different blockchains, have been among the most frequently exploited areas in crypto. 

The Ronin bridge hack in 2022 resulted in $625 million in losses. Wormhole lost $320 million in a separate exploit the same year. Any project that relies heavily on bridge technology carries additional smart contract risk that the evaluation needs to account for.

Analyse the Tokenomics

Tokenomics is the economic design of a project’s token that determines whether holding the token is a sustainable proposition or a race to the exit.

Many projects fail not because the technology is bad, but because the token was designed in a way that creates selling pressure faster than the project creates buying demand.

The total supply matters. A token with a fixed supply of 21 million (like Bitcoin) has a predictably scarce supply. A token with an unlimited supply and high inflation rewards dilutes existing holders continuously unless demand grows faster than issuance. 

Neither structure is inherently good or bad, but the design needs to make sense given the project’s goals and the value the token is supposed to capture.

Look at the token distribution. How much of the total supply goes to the founding team? What percentage goes to early investors? What is the allocation for the community, the treasury, and public sale participants? 

A distribution where 50% or more goes to insiders, like the founders and early investors, concentrates economic power in a small group with a strong financial incentive to sell. A more distributed model creates better long-term alignment between the project’s success and the interests of the people using it.

Vesting schedules are equally important. Team tokens that vest over four years with a one-year cliff align founder incentives with long-term project health. 

Team tokens that vest over six months create a situation where founders can cash out shortly after launch, regardless of project performance. Read the vesting terms carefully and check whether they are enforced by smart contracts (which makes them binding) or only by agreement (which can be modified).

Understand what the token is actually for. Utility tokens are used within the project’s ecosystem, paying for services, accessing features, or participating in governance. Security tokens represent ownership or rights to revenue. 

Governance tokens give holders voting power over protocol decisions. Liquidity tokens represent a share of a trading pool. 

Many projects blur these categories, issuing tokens that are described as utility tokens but function primarily as speculative assets. A token that nobody uses but everyone wants to trade is a financial instrument, not a utility.

Look at the inflation and emission schedule. Some projects issue new tokens continuously as rewards for validators, liquidity providers, or other participants. 

If the rate of new token issuance outpaces the growth in demand for the token, the price will trend downward regardless of project quality. Understand what the annual inflation rate is, who receives the new tokens, and whether there are any mechanisms like token burning that reduce supply over time to offset inflation.

Solana is a useful example here. Its token economics include ongoing inflation that decreases over time, with a long-term target of around 1.5% annual inflation. Validators earn staking rewards from that inflation, which creates an incentive structure for network security. 

The design is explicit, documented, and verifiable. This is what good token economics documentation looks like: specific numbers, clear mechanisms, and honest acknowledgment of the trade-offs.

Evaluate the Market Opportunity

A technically strong project with a well-designed token still fails if it is building for a market that does not exist or is already saturated with better-positioned competitors. 

Market analysis is where a lot of crypto research falls short. People focus on the project itself and neglect the broader context in which it operates.

Start by asking who the intended users are and how many of them exist. A DeFi lending protocol targeting active crypto traders is operating in a measurable market. You can look at total value locked (TVL) across existing protocols, trading volumes on decentralised exchanges, and the number of active DeFi wallets to estimate the size of that market. 

A project claiming to disrupt traditional banking for the 1.4 billion unbanked people globally is making a much less substantiated market size claim, because most of those people do not have smartphones, reliable internet access, or the regulatory environment needed to use crypto products.

Examine the competition. If a project is entering a market with established players, it needs a clear explanation of why users would switch. Aave and Compound have years of liquidity, established trust, and proven security. 

A new lending protocol needs something genuinely differentiated, not just a different interface, but a meaningful improvement in rates, risk management, capital efficiency, or user experience to pull liquidity away from those incumbents.

Look at the timing. Some projects fail not because they are wrong about the market but because they are too early. Cross-chain messaging protocols in 2019 were technically interesting but had almost no developer adoption because the multi-chain ecosystem was not yet developed enough to need them. 

The same technology in 2023 had a significantly more natural market fit. Timing does not guarantee success, but a project that is solving a problem that becomes more relevant over time has better prospects than one solving a problem that is already solved.

Consider the regulatory environment for the specific market in which the project operates. DeFi protocols face different regulatory risks in different jurisdictions. Centralised crypto exchanges face ongoing licensing requirements. 

Stablecoins are under increasing regulatory scrutiny in the US and EU. A project that ignores regulatory risk or dismisses it as irrelevant is not engaging seriously with one of the most significant factors affecting the crypto market.

Examine On-Chain Data

One of the genuine advantages of evaluating crypto projects compared to evaluating traditional businesses is that most of the activity happens in public. Every transaction on a public blockchain is visible, verifiable, and permanent. This creates a level of transparency that does not exist anywhere else in finance.

Look at transaction volume and active addresses. These are the most direct measures of whether people are actually using a project. 

A protocol with $500 million in total value locked and 200 active wallets suggests that a small number of large actors, possibly the team itself, are responsible for most of the activity.

A protocol with $200 million TVL and 50,000 active wallets suggests genuine broad adoption. Tools like Dune Analytics, Nansen, and Glassnode make this data accessible without requiring any technical background.

Check the token holder distribution. Services like Etherscan for Ethereum-based tokens and equivalent block explorers for other chains show you how tokens are distributed across wallet addresses. 

If the top 10 wallets hold 80% or more of the supply, that concentration creates significant selling risk, as a small number of holders can move the market dramatically. It also raises questions about whether the decentralisation claims in the project’s marketing reflect the actual power structure.

Look at smart contract interactions. For DeFi protocols, you can see how many unique addresses have interacted with the contract, how frequently interactions occur, and what types of actions users are taking.

If a protocol claims to have a thriving user base but the on-chain data shows infrequent interactions from a small number of wallets, the gap between the claim and the data is important.

Track developer activity on GitHub. The number of commits, the number of contributors, and the consistency of development activity over time show whether the team is actively building. 

A project with 20 commits in the past year on its core repository is effectively in maintenance mode. A project with daily commits across multiple contributors is in active development. GitHub does not tell you whether the code is good, but it tells you whether development is actually happening.

Monitor liquidity depth. For tokens that trade on decentralised exchanges, look at the liquidity pool depth relative to the token’s market cap. 

A token with a $50 million market cap but only $500,000 in liquidity pools can be moved dramatically by a single large trade. Thin liquidity is a risk both for price stability and as a signal that the market’s conviction in the project is limited.

Read the Community and Governance

The community around a crypto project is both a signal of its health and a factor in its future. Projects with large, engaged, technically literate communities are more resilient than those with communities built primarily around price speculation.

Look at where the community gathers. Discord and Telegram are the primary platforms for most crypto project communities. 

X(Twitter) is where public conversations happen. GitHub is where technical discussion takes place. A healthy project has activity across all of these, with different types of conversations happening in each place: technical questions in GitHub, product feedback in Discord, broader market discussion on Twitter.

Pay attention to the quality of the discourse, not just the volume. A community where every message is a variation of “when moon?” or “great project, buying more” is not engaged with the project; it is engaged with the price.

A community where people debate technical trade-offs, report bugs, suggest product improvements, and hold the team accountable to roadmap commitments is actually invested in what the project is building.

Look at how the team interacts with the community. Do founders and core developers participate in technical discussions? Do they respond to critical questions honestly? Do they acknowledge when things go wrong? 

A team that only communicates positive news and avoids critical questions is one that will not communicate well during difficult periods, which every project eventually goes through.

Governance is one of the most important and most neglected aspects of crypto project evaluation. A project that claims to be decentralised but has a small group controlling governance decisions is not actually decentralised in any meaningful sense. 

Look at who holds governance tokens, how voting works, what voter participation rates look like, and what types of decisions have actually been put to a governance vote.

Uniswap’s governance is a useful benchmark. It operates with on-chain voting, public proposal discussions, and transparent voting records. Anyone can see who voted on what and how. 

Participation rates vary and are often low, which is a genuine limitation of token governance systems, but the mechanism is transparent, and the outcomes are verifiable. Compare any project’s governance claims to what you can actually verify on-chain.

Be cautious of projects where the team retains administrative keys that allow them to modify the protocol without a governance vote. These “admin keys” are sometimes presented as safety features that allow rapid response to exploits, which is a legitimate argument. 

But they also represent centralised control that can be used to change the protocol in ways that benefit insiders at the expense of users. Check whether admin keys exist, who holds them, and what the project’s stated plan is for eventually removing them.

Assess Partnerships and Backers

Partnerships and investor backing are often presented as validation signals, and they can be, but only if you look past the surface.

A partnership announcement from a major corporation means very little on its own. Many crypto projects announce partnerships with companies that amount to nothing more than a pilot programme, a memorandum of understanding, or a joint press release. 

These arrangements rarely generate revenue, rarely lead to meaningful integration, and are sometimes discontinued quietly months after the announcement. 

Before treating a partnership as a positive signal, ask what specifically the partnership involves, whether there is any financial commitment from the other party, and whether you can find any independent confirmation that the relationship exists.

Investor backing from credible venture capital firms in the crypto space, like Andreessen Horowitz’s a16z crypto fund, Paradigm, Multicoin Capital, Coinbase Ventures, and Binance Labs, carries more signal than a partnership announcement because these firms do financial due diligence before committing capital. 

That said, even sophisticated investors back projects that fail. VC backing is a useful positive signal, but not a guarantee of quality.

Look at when the investment was made. A venture firm that invested in a project’s seed round in 2021 at a time when capital was plentiful, and due diligence was often abbreviated, is a weaker signal than a firm that led a Series 

A round in 2024 after sustained market scrutiny. The market conditions at the time of investment affect how much inference you can draw from who invested.

Check whether the backers have publicly advocated for the project. Investors who genuinely believe in a project tend to publish research, participate in community discussions, and reference the project in broader conversations about the space. Investors who are silent about a project they supposedly back may have made a financial bet without genuine conviction about the project’s direction.

Red flags in crypto project evaluation fall into consistent patterns. Learning to recognise them quickly saves time and prevents expensive mistakes.

1. Guaranteed returns. 

Any project that promises specific returns like “10% monthly yields,” “guaranteed 2x in six months” is either describing an unsustainable model or actively misleading investors. 

Sustainable yield comes from real economic activity: trading fees, interest margins, and protocol revenue. Guaranteed returns that are not backed by verifiable revenue sources are funded by new investor capital, which is the definition of a Ponzi scheme.

2. Anonymous teams with no accountability. 

As noted earlier, anonymous founders are not automatically disqualifying. But anonymity combined with no verifiable track record, no code audit, and no community governance structure is a high-risk combination.

3. No working product. 

A project that has been raising money for two years and still has no mainnet product, no testnet with real usage, and no clear explanation for the delay is not building. It is fundraising. The white paper and the roadmap are the product.

4. Aggressive marketing relative to development activity. 

When a project invests more in influencer campaigns, sponsored content, and Telegram shilling than in engineering, the priorities reveal the strategy. Projects that are building tend to have quieter marketing and louder developer communities. Projects that are selling tend to have the reverse.

5. Token price disconnected from fundamentals.

A token that has increased 500% in 60 days with no corresponding increase in usage, revenue, or developer activity is in speculative momentum territory. 

This does not mean it will not continue to rise; momentum can persist, but it means the price is not reflecting the underlying value, which makes the downside risk significant.

6. No clear token utility. 

If you cannot explain in one sentence what you use the token for within the project’s ecosystem, the token may not have a fundamental reason to hold value beyond speculation. “It is the governance token” is not sufficient if governance votes are infrequent and inconsequential.

7. Copied white papers or code. 

Cases of crypto projects plagiarising white papers and copying open-source code without attribution are documented. 

Use plagiarism checkers on key sections of a white paper, and check the GitHub repository for attribution to source projects. A project that is not honest about what it has built from scratch and what it has adapted is not being honest with you.

Compare to Competitors

No project exists in isolation. Evaluating a project without comparing it to its closest competitors gives you an incomplete picture of its actual competitive position.

Map out who the direct competitors are. If you are evaluating a decentralised perpetual exchange, the relevant competitors include dYdX, GMX, Synthetix Perps, and Drift Protocol. 

Each of these has different fee structures, liquidity mechanisms, collateral requirements, and target user profiles. Understanding these differences tells you whether the project you are evaluating offers something genuinely better or is essentially the same product with different branding.

Compare the metrics that actually matter for the specific category. For DeFi lending protocols, TVL and utilisation rates are the key performance indicators. 

For Layer 1 blockchains, transactions per second, active addresses, and developer activity are the critical metrics. For NFT marketplaces, trading volume and unique buyer counts matter more than the number of listings. Define what a successful outcome looks like for the specific project type before you compare.

Look at market share trends, not just absolute numbers. A project with $100 million in TVL that was at $1 billion six months ago is losing ground. 

A project with $100 million in TVL that was at $10 million six months ago is gaining it. The direction of the trend is as informative as the current position.

Consider network effects. Some markets in crypto are winner-take-most because liquidity, users, and developers all attract more of the same. Ethereum’s developer ecosystem is so large that competing general-purpose smart contract platforms face a significant network effect disadvantage regardless of their technical merits. 

A new Layer 1 needs a compelling reason for developers to build on it specifically whether that is lower fees, higher throughput, specific programming language support, or deep integration with a particular asset class. “We are faster and cheaper than Ethereum” is not differentiated, because several chains can make that claim.

Evaluate the Roadmap and Delivery Track Record

A roadmap tells you what a project intends to build. The delivery track record tells you whether you can believe them.

Look at whether the project has a published roadmap and whether it is specific. “Q3 2025: Mainnet launch” is specific. “2025: Continued development and ecosystem growth” is not. Specific roadmaps are harder to game you can check in Q4 whether the Q3 deliverable happened. Vague roadmaps provide cover for indefinite delays.

If the project has been operating for more than a year, compare the current state of the product to the roadmap from twelve months ago. 

Did they deliver what they said they would? If they missed targets, did they communicate the delays proactively and explain why? 

Roadmap slippage is common in software development and does not automatically disqualify a project. How a team communicates and responds to missed deadlines reveals more about their integrity than the delays themselves.

Look at the history of major announcements. Every crypto project generates press releases, blog posts, and community updates.

Reading these chronologically gives you a picture of how the project has evolved and whether the team’s description of the project has stayed consistent or shifted significantly. 

Teams that continuously reframe what the project is about, pivoting the narrative while keeping the token, are often struggling to find product-market fit and managing investor sentiment rather than building.

Watch for what is not on the roadmap. A DeFi project that never mentions security audits, a gaming project that has no mention of player acquisition strategy, or a cross-chain bridge that omits any discussion of risk management; these omissions are informative. What a project does not address is sometimes as telling as what it does.

Consider the Macro Environment

Individual project analysis only takes you so far. The broader crypto market environment shapes outcomes in ways that even excellent projects cannot fully control.

Crypto markets are cyclical, and the cycles are driven by a combination of Bitcoin’s halving schedule, broader macroeconomic conditions, particularly interest rates, and waves of retail and institutional adoption. Understanding where in the cycle the market currently sits affects how you think about timing and risk.

In bull markets, capital flows freely into the space, valuations expand, and even weak projects attract investment. Due diligence standards often fall. In bear markets, capital contracts, weak projects lose funding and die, and the projects that survive tend to be the ones with real revenue, real users, and real utility. 

Evaluating a project’s fundamentals rather than its price momentum is most important precisely when the market does not seem to care about fundamentals.

Regulatory developments at the macro level affect all projects, but affect different types of projects differently. A regulatory crackdown on centralised exchanges increases the relative value of decentralised alternatives. 

Clear regulations for stablecoins create a more favourable environment for stablecoin-based products. Restrictions on institutional crypto investment reduce one category of demand while leaving retail demand intact. Understand how the project you are evaluating is likely to be affected by regulatory developments in its primary markets.

Macro interest rates affect crypto more than most people in the space acknowledge. When risk-free returns from bonds or money market funds are 4–5%, the opportunity cost of holding speculative assets rises. 

When rates are near zero, investors reach for yield, and risk assets benefit. The 2021–2022 crypto bull market coincided with near-zero rates. 

The 2022–2023 bear market coincided with rapid rate increases. This macro relationship does not determine which projects succeed, but it shapes the environment in which they succeed or fail.

Build a Scoring Framework

Evaluating every project from scratch is time-consuming. Building a consistent scoring framework makes the process faster and more objective, particularly if you are looking at multiple projects simultaneously.

A practical framework scores projects across five core dimensions:
