ATM skimming is a fraudulent technique used to capture card information from unsuspecting users at automated teller machines (ATMs). Criminals typically place a small device, known as a skimmer, on the ATM’s card reader to record data from the magnetic stripe of bank cards. This device can be difficult to detect, blending in with the ATM’s design.
In addition to the skimmer, fraudsters often install a hidden camera or an overlay on the ATM keypad to capture the user’s Personal Identification Number (PIN) as they enter it. Once they have both the card information and the PIN, criminals can create counterfeit cards or access the victim’s bank account directly.
ATM skimming is significant in the finance and payment sectors as it highlights the vulnerabilities in electronic payment systems. It poses serious risks to consumers, financial institutions, and the overall security of electronic transactions. Awareness and preventive measures, such as using ATMs from trusted sources and monitoring bank statements regularly, are essential in mitigating these risks.
