Definition
Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 network using Optimistic Rollup technology developed by OP Labs, designed to scale Ethereum while inheriting its security guarantees. Like Arbitrum, Optimism processes transactions off-chain and posts compressed transaction data (or proofs) to Ethereum – enabling fast, cheap transactions with ultimate settlement on Ethereum L1. Optimism’s key distinguishing feature is the OP Stack – an open-source modular framework for building Ethereum L2 chains – which has been adopted by Coinbase’s Base, Binance’s opBNB, Worldcoin, and dozens of other chains, forming the “Superchain” vision of interconnected OP Stack chains sharing security and liquidity. The OP governance token launched in May 2022, and Optimism’s Bedrock upgrade (2023) dramatically reduced costs and aligned the system closer to Ethereum’s execution model.

How It Works

| OP Stack Component | Description |
| Execution Layer | EVM-equivalent execution of transactions |
| Derivation | How L2 state is derived from L1 data |
| Communication | Standard cross-chain message passing between OP chains |
| Settlement | Ultimate finality provided by Ethereum L1 |
| Governance | OP Token Collective (Token House + Citizens’ House) |
In Simple Terms
- Ethereum L2 with a twist: Like Arbitrum, Optimism makes Ethereum transactions fast and cheap – but its unique contribution is the OP Stack framework enabling others to build compatible chains.
- Superchain = chain of chains: Instead of many isolated L2s, OP Stack chains can share sequencers, liquidity, and security – moving toward a unified “Superchain” ecosystem.
- Base is OP’s biggest win: Coinbase building Base on the OP Stack brought tens of millions of users to the OP ecosystem – the best example of the framework’s success.
- Two-house governance: Optimism uses a dual governance structure – Token House (OP holders vote on protocol changes) and Citizens’ House (non-transferable governance for public goods funding).
- Retroactive public goods funding: Optimism’s RetroPGF (Retroactive Public Goods Funding) distributes sequencer profits to projects that benefited the Ethereum/Optimism ecosystem – a novel funding mechanism.
Real-World Examples
| Scenario | Implementation | Outcome |
| Synthetix on Optimism | SNX staking moved from Ethereum to Optimism | Gas costs reduced 99%; Synthetix became primary Optimism anchor protocol |
| Base launch | Coinbase builds Base on OP Stack | Millions of users onboarded; Friend.tech, Base tokens drive adoption |
| Bedrock upgrade | June 2023 upgrade reduces gas ~50% | Optimism becomes significantly cheaper; activity surges |
| RetroPGF Round 3 | 30M OP distributed to developers, tooling, and infrastructure | First large-scale retroactive public goods experiment in crypto |
| World Chain | Worldcoin builds World Chain on OP Stack | Identity verification + Ethereum security; millions of users |
Advantages
| Advantage | Detail |
| Ethereum security | Inherits Ethereum L1 security through data posting and fraud proofs |
| OP Stack ecosystem | Largest L2 framework by chains deployed; Superchain interoperability |
| Base synergy | Coinbase’s Base brings massive user base into OP Stack ecosystem |
| RetroPGF innovation | Novel retroactive funding mechanism for public goods |
| Low fees | Post-Bedrock: typical transactions $0.01–$0.50 |
| EVM equivalence | Standard Ethereum tools and contracts work without modification |
Disadvantages & Risks
| Risk | Detail |
| 7-day withdrawal | Same as Arbitrum – native bridge takes 7 days without fast bridging |
| Sequencer centralisation | Centralised sequencer until full decentralisation; censorship risk |
| Base competition | Base (on OP Stack) now exceeds Optimism One in activity – cannibalisation risk |
| Governance complexity | Two-house governance adds coordination complexity |
| Bridge risk | Multiple bridge hacks across L2 ecosystem (not Optimism-specific but relevant) |
Risk Management Tips
- Use Hop Protocol, Across, or Stargate for fast (minutes, not 7 days) bridging back to Ethereum
- Understand that Base is separate from Optimism One (different RPC, chain ID 8453 for Base vs 10 for Optimism)
- Monitor OP token unlock schedule for potential sell pressure
- Use L2Beat to track Optimism’s security score and centralisation status
FAQ
What is the difference between Optimism and Arbitrum?
Both are Optimistic Rollups with similar security properties. Key differences: Arbitrum uses interactive fraud proofs (more efficient), Optimism uses single-round fault proofs. The biggest practical difference is ecosystem – Optimism’s OP Stack has more chains (Base, etc.) while Arbitrum has higher TVL on its flagship chain.
What is Base and how is it related to Optimism?
Base is Coinbase’s L2 network, built entirely on the OP Stack. While Coinbase owns Base, it contributes to the OP Stack’s development. Base is separate from Optimism One but shares the underlying framework and contributes to the Superchain vision.
What is RetroPGF?
Retroactive Public Goods Funding – Optimism distributes a portion of its sequencer profits to projects and people who have already contributed value to the Ethereum/Optimism ecosystem. Instead of grants before work is done, RetroPGF pays after impact is proven.
What is the OP Token Collective?
Optimism’s two-house governance: Token House (OP holders vote on protocol upgrades, treasury usage) and Citizens’ House (non-transferable “citizenship” votes on public goods funding allocation via RetroPGF).
How do I add Optimism to MetaMask?
Network name: Optimism, RPC URL: https://mainnet.optimism.io, Chain ID: 10, Currency: ETH. Or use Chainlist.org for one-click setup.
