SegWit2x is a proposed upgrade to the Bitcoin blockchain that involves implementing two separate improvements. The first part, Segregated Witness (SegWit), aims to increase the efficiency of the network by separating transaction signatures from the transaction data, thus reducing the size of each transaction. This allows more transactions to be processed at once, leading to faster confirmation times and lower fees.
The second part of SegWit2x is the increase of the block size from 1MB to 2MB. This is done to further increase the network’s capacity and accommodate more transactions per block. This increase in block size is intended to address the scalability issues that Bitcoin has been facing, especially during times of high network activity.
The SegWit2x proposal was highly controversial within the Bitcoin community, leading to a hard fork in November 2017. While the upgrade was initially supported by a significant portion of the community, it eventually faced opposition from various stakeholders, resulting in the cancellation of the implementation.
