# Soft Fork

A Soft Fork is an update to a cryptocurrency protocol that is backward-compatible, meaning older versions of the software can still interact with the network. This type of fork does not result in a permanent split of the blockchain, as all nodes on the network can still validate blocks and transactions.

Soft forks are typically implemented to introduce new features or make improvements to the existing protocol. They are considered less disruptive than hard forks, which require all nodes to upgrade to the new software in order to continue participating in the network.

During a soft fork, the network remains intact, but nodes that have not upgraded may not be able to take advantage of the new features. However, they can still communicate with nodes that have upgraded, ensuring that the network remains secure and functional.

Overall, soft forks are seen as a more efficient way to upgrade a blockchain network compared to hard forks, as they require less coordination and do not risk splitting the community. By maintaining backward compatibility, soft forks can lead to smoother transitions and less disruption for users.
