Solana is one of the most active Layer-1 blockchains in the world, and in 2026 its ecosystem looks very different from two years ago.

DeFi total value locked sits above $6 billion, Solana’s decentralised exchanges traded about $79 billion over the past 30 days against Ethereum’s $43 billion on DefiLlama’s figures, and projects like Jupiter, Kamino, Jito and Pump.fun have reshaped what a top Solana project actually means.

This guide covers ten projects by what each does and who uses it.

## Key Takeaways

- Solana held about $6.6 billion in DeFi total value locked on 27 September 2026, second among all chains behind Ethereum’s $53.3 billion, on DefiLlama’s figures.
- DefiLlama does not count liquid staking toward chain TVL, so Sanctum’s $2.33 billion and Jito’s $1.29 billion sit outside that $6.6 billion, not inside it.
- Stablecoins on Solana totalled $16.51 billion, USDC $7.30 billion of that, on 27 September 2026.
- The last full mainnet-beta halt began at 09:53 UTC on 6 February 2024 and lasted, in Solana’s own words, “approximately five hours”.
- Alpenglow went live on testnet on 24 September and devnet on 25 September 2026, TowerBFT retired on both, with no announced mainnet date. Anza targets about 150 milliseconds of finality against roughly 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT.

## The Solana Ecosystem in 2026: What the Numbers Show

| **Metric** | **Figure** | **Source and date** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| DeFi total value locked | About $6.6 billion | DefiLlama chains listing, 27 Sep 2026 |
| Rank among all chains | Second, behind Ethereum at $53.3 billion | DefiLlama chains listing, 27 Sep 2026 |
| Largest single protocol (liquid staking, not counted in the figure above) | Sanctum, $2.33 billion | DefiLlama Solana chain page, 27 Sep 2026 |
| Stablecoins issued on Solana | $16.51 billion, USDC $7.30 billion of it | DefiLlama stablecoins page, 27 Sep 2026 |
| Last full network halt | 6 February 2024, approximately five hours | Solana outage report |
| Consensus upgrade | Alpenglow, live on testnet and devnet, no mainnet date | Anza, September 2026 |

One caveat on the first row. DefiLlama’s documentation says liquid staking protocols are “tracked but not counted towards chain TVL by default”, so Sanctum’s $2.33 billion and Jito’s $1.29 billion sit outside the $6.6 billion.

That is why the table below adds to more than the chain total.

## What is Solana?

![Solana blockchain logo. ](https://blog.upay.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-107-1024x662.png)

Solana has earned its reputation as a high-performance blockchain, setting itself apart with its speed and efficiency. That throughput, and its low fees, made it attractive to developers.

At the core of it lies [Proof of History](https://blog.upay.com/crypto-terminology/proof-of-history-poh/). Rather than relying on proof of work or proof of stake alone, it uses a verifiable delay function to timestamp transactions, so validators verify faster.

Alpenglow, below, retires Proof of History along with TowerBFT, so this describes Solana as it runs today. Our [Solana glossary entry](https://blog.upay.com/crypto-terminology/solana/) covers the basics.

## The Network Record: Outages, Firedancer and Alpenglow

Most roundups skip this, and it decides whether the projects below stay usable when the chain is busy.

Solana has stopped before. The last full mainnet-beta halt began at 09:53 UTC on 6 February 2024, when in the outage report’s own words “block finalization halted”, and it puts the incident at “approximately five hours”. A validator cache bug was the cause: evicting a legacy loader program sent it into an infinite recompile loop.

Firedancer answers that fragility. It is an independent validator client written from scratch so one implementation’s bug cannot stop everything, and its repository publishes a hybrid build, Frankendancer, and the full client, each marked “This is a mainnet ready release”: v0.1204.40300 on 21 September 2026 and v26.08.5 on 15 September.

A mainnet-ready release says the maintainers consider the software fit to run. What matters for client diversity is stake, and both are on mainnet already.

Jump’s 2025 Breakpoint session put Frankendancer at 20 to 30 percent of mainnet stake across roughly 175 validators, and said the full client had voted on mainnet since July 2025 and produced blocks since October 2025, on a few low-stake validators.

Alpenglow is the replacement for Solana’s consensus, filed as [SIMD-0326](https://github.com/solana-foundation/solana-improvement-documents/blob/main/proposals/0326-alpenglow.md) on 25 July 2025. Its status field still reads Review and its feature-gate field is unfilled. The rollout has moved anyway.

Anza activated Alpenglow on testnet on 24 September 2026 and on devnet on 25 September, retiring TowerBFT on both. Mainnet-beta has no announced date: Anza ties it to an observation period of unstated length, and the Agave v4.4 schedule lists mainnet-beta feature activations resuming on 9 November 2026.

Anza’s design post puts Alpenglow’s target at “about 150 ms (median)” of finality, sometimes “as fast as 100 ms”, against “about 12.8 sec” under TowerBFT. Our [Alpenglow explainer](https://blog.upay.com/the-protocol-solanas-alpenglow-upgrade-is-live-for-testing/) covers what it changes.

## Top 10 Solana Projects to Watch Out For

First, how the largest protocols compare. Two of them, Sanctum and Drift, are not among the ten profiled below, and every figure is a [DefiLlama](https://defillama.com/chain/solana) reading from 27 September 2026.

| **Category** | **Protocol** | **Value locked on Solana, 27 September 2026** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Liquid staking infrastructure | Sanctum | $2.33 billion |
| Trading and aggregation | Jupiter | $2.04 billion |
| Lending and structured yield | Kamino | $1.57 billion |
| Automated market maker | Raydium | $1.39 billion |
| Liquid staking with MEV | Jito | $1.29 billion |
| Token launches | Pump | $405 million |
| Perpetuals | Drift | $350 million |

### 1. Magic Eden

![Solana projects to watch out for: Magic Eden. ](https://blog.upay.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-108.png)

Magic Eden is the best known NFT marketplace on Solana, with a wide range of digital art, collectibles and gaming assets.

It spent years expanding onto Bitcoin and EVM chains, then reversed course. Its Help Center article says support for EVM chains and Bitcoin ended on 9 March 2026, the Bitcoin and Runes APIs followed on 27 March, and “Magic Eden will continue supporting the Solana Marketplace and Packs”.

**Key features:** a Launchpad that helps creators mint, and support for Metaplex Core, Token 22 and compressed NFTs. Whether a creator is paid a royalty on a resale depends on the collection.

### 2. Mad Lads

Mad Lads is Solana’s best known NFT collection, 10,000 anime-inspired items from the Backpack wallet team. What separates it from earlier collections like Degenerate Ape Academy is utility: holders receive airdrops, and it has the visibility of a team still shipping.

**Best for:** collectors who want an active holder community. **Key risk:** floor prices track market sentiment.

## Decentralized Finance (DeFi) on Solana

Solana’s high throughput and low fees make it good ground for decentralised finance.

### 3. Raydium

![Raydium interface. ](https://blog.upay.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-109.png)

Raydium is a prominent decentralised exchange on an automated market maker model. Pools and pricing algorithms handle trades, so there is no order book.

**Key features:** instant liquidity without a counterparty; yield farming rewards for supplying it; and Fusion pools, which let new projects bootstrap liquidity. Raydium held $1.39 billion on DefiLlama on 27 September 2026.

### 4. Jupiter (JUP)

Jupiter is the central trading hub of the Solana ecosystem, and on 27 September 2026 it held $2.04 billion on DefiLlama, second on the chain behind Sanctum.

It began as a swap aggregator, routing trades across Raydium, Orca and other venues to find the best price, and now covers spot trading, perpetuals and token launches. The JUP token is used for governance.

**Why it matters:** Solana’s liquidity is spread across dozens of protocols and Jupiter routes around that fragmentation, so when somebody swaps a token there is a good chance Jupiter is doing the routing.

**Best for:** anyone swapping tokens. **Key risk:** smart contract risk across every protocol it integrates, and front-end phishing.

### 5. Marinade Finance

![Marinade Finance dashboard. ](https://blog.upay.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-110-1024x683.png)

Marinade is a liquid staking protocol: it lets you stake SOL while keeping something you can use, so your capital earns rewards and stays available for DeFi.

**Key features:** Marinade issues mSOL for staked SOL, and mSOL works across lending, borrowing and yield protocols while the stake keeps earning. The DAO runs it and the code is audited.

DefiLlama’s Marinade Liquid Staking listing showed $287.07 million on 27 September 2026. Its Marinade parent page showed $951.45 million the same day, because the parent aggregates three listings: Marinade Liquid Staking, Marinade Native and Marinade Select.

The two native-staking products hold most of that, so the mSOL product is the smaller number and the one this section is about. Marinade was once Solana’s default staking route: Sanctum, whose infrastructure lets any validator issue its own [liquid staking token](https://blog.upay.com/crypto-terminology/liquid-staking/), now leads the chain.

### 6. Helium Network

![Helium Network coverage map. ](https://blog.upay.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-111.png)

Helium is a decentralised wireless network providing long-range, low-power connectivity for Internet of Things devices. It migrated from its own blockchain to Solana in 2023.

**Key features:** individuals deploy Helium Hotspots, earning HNT for the coverage they provide, and LongFi reaches over miles, which suits sensors rather than bandwidth. Helium Mobile extends it to phone service.

### 7. Pump.fun

Pump.fun became one of the most-used applications on Solana across 2025 and 2026, letting anyone launch a token in minutes for a small fee. DefiLlama listed Pump at $405 million on 27 September 2026.

Many of those tokens are short-lived memecoins, but the platform drove an enormous volume of activity and made Solana the default chain for grassroots launches.

**Best for:** people launching tokens. **Key risk:** an extremely speculative environment.

### 8. Phantom Wallet

Phantom is the front door to the Solana ecosystem for most people, storing your assets, connecting to applications and handling staking without a command line.

**Key features:** a legible interface, which matters when you are approving a transaction; good NFT handling; staking and hardware wallet pairing; and support for other networks. We covered it in [what is a Phantom wallet](https://blog.upay.com/what-is-a-phantom-wallet/).

### 9. Kamino Finance (KMNO)

Kamino is Solana’s largest lending and yield protocol, at $1.57 billion on DefiLlama on 27 September 2026, third on the chain that day. It runs borrowing and lending markets, automated liquidity vaults and structured yield strategies.

**Best for:** lending, borrowing or structured yield. **Key risk:** smart contract risk, and liquidation in fast markets.

### 10. Jito (JTO)

Jito is a major liquid staking protocol, at $1.29 billion on DefiLlama on 27 September 2026, and it differs from its peers through its MEV capture model.

Stake SOL through Jito and you receive JitoSOL, usable across DeFi while the stake keeps earning. Jito also passes MEV rewards back, so the return is typically higher than plain staking. It sits second among staking protocols, narrowly ahead of Binance’s staked SOL.

**Best for:** SOL holders who want rewards without locking capital away. **Key risk:** smart contract risk, and JitoSOL trading away from its stake in extreme stress.

## How to Get Started With Solana Projects

**Get a Solana wallet.** Phantom is the most widely used, Backpack the alternative if Mad Lads interests you. Download only from the official site.

**Buy SOL.** You need it for fees and for most DeFi protocols. Buy from a regulated exchange and send it to your own wallet address.

**Swap something small on Jupiter.** That teaches you how aggregation works, and from there you can look at lending, staking or NFTs.

**Spending it.** A crypto card is not a direct-debit card on your Solana wallet. With UPay you move funds into the UPay wallet and recharge the card from there, at a published 2 percent recharge fee, with issuance of 10 USDT virtual or 100 USDT physical.

## Are Solana Projects Safe? What You Need to Know Before You Start

**Smart contract risk:** audited protocols have still been exploited, so favour ones with a track record and published audits.

**Phishing:** fake versions of popular Solana sites are common. Type the address yourself or use a saved bookmark, and never connect a wallet to a site you did not navigate to.

**Token and liquidation risk:** most tokens, memecoins above all, lose most of their value quickly, and collateral borrowed against on Kamino or Drift can be sold automatically.

**Network risk:** Solana has halted before, and client concentration is still worth watching.

## Wrap Up

The ten projects here show an ecosystem that has matured rather than grown. Jupiter and Sanctum sit where Kamino and Marinade once did, and Magic Eden has pulled back to Solana alone.

The network has gone longer without a halt than at any point in its life, and the consensus rewrite meant to make the next one less likely now runs on two of its three public clusters. Check the figures yourself: DefiLlama updates continuously.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which Solana project has the highest TVL?

Sanctum, at $2.33 billion on DefiLlama’s Solana chain page on 27 September 2026, ahead of Jupiter at $2.04 billion and Kamino at $1.57 billion. Sanctum is liquid staking, which DefiLlama does not count in the chain total.

### Why is Solana so successful?

Its speed and its fees. Transactions settle quickly for fractions of a cent, making applications viable that are uneconomic elsewhere.

### What are some real-world applications of Solana?

In DeFi it powers exchanges, lending markets and staking; in NFTs, marketplaces; in gaming, play-to-earn models. Helium extends it to wireless coverage, and $16.51 billion of stablecoins were issued on it by 27 September 2026.

### Is Solana still going down?

Not since 6 February 2024. That halt began at 09:53 UTC and Solana’s own report puts it at approximately five hours. No blockchain is immune, so plan for the chain being unavailable.

### Are Firedancer and Alpenglow live?

Frankendancer carried 20 to 30 percent of mainnet stake at Jump’s 2025 Breakpoint session, and the full client has produced mainnet blocks since October 2025. Alpenglow has run on testnet and devnet since 24 and 25 September 2026, TowerBFT retired on both, with no announced mainnet date.
