Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has obtained an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), allowing it to issue electronic money and facilitate faster transactions for clients.
The authorization marks a significant regulatory milestone for Kraken, strengthening its position in the U.K. market and enabling the company to expand its product offerings. The license also provides opportunities for partnerships with traditional financial institutions as Kraken seeks to broaden its financial services.
Regulatory Approval Supports Expansion
The EMI license is part of Kraken’s broader strategy to grow its presence in the U.K. and Europe. It follows the company’s recent acquisition of a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) license in the European Union, which allows Kraken to offer regulated crypto derivatives to advanced traders.
Kraken’s U.K. General Manager, Bivu Das, said the regulatory approval comes at a crucial time as more U.K. residents incorporate cryptocurrency into their investment portfolios. According to FCA data, approximately 12% of the U.K. adult population—over seven million people—now own digital assets.
U.K. Market Growth and Future Plans
The U.K. is one of Kraken’s most active markets by trading volume, with the exchange offering more than 300 cryptocurrency assets. Kraken introduced one of the first BTC/GBP trading pairs in 2014 and continues to lead in GBP-denominated transactions.
The company has also expanded its presence through sponsorships with U.K. sports teams, including Williams Racing and Tottenham Hotspur FC. Additionally, Kraken was recognized in Newsweek’s Top 100 Most Loved U.K. Workplaces in both 2023 and 2024.
Looking ahead, Kraken plans to introduce new crypto and fiat financial products in the coming months. These offerings aim to provide U.K. users with additional liquidity options and expanded opportunities for managing their digital assets.
