Finality in blockchain refers to the point at which a transaction can be considered irreversible and permanently confirmed – the guarantee that validated transactions will not be altered, reversed, or removed from the blockchain’s ledger. Different blockchains achieve finality through different mechanisms and at different speeds, creating fundamental trade-offs between finality time, security guarantees, and throughput. Bitcoin uses “probabilistic finality” – transactions become more immutably confirmed with each additional block confirmation, with 6 confirmations (~60 minutes) considered sufficiently final for most purposes.
