Stablecoin Supply Holds Near $305.5 Billion as USDC Contracts

Stablecoin

Stablecoin market capitalisation barely changed in October, reaching $305.5 billion in research published by CoinDesk on October 28.

The measured total rose 0.10%, while USDC supply fell 2.80% to $72.3 billion. The figures describe a market snapshot published before month-end, rather than October’s final results.

Key Takeaways

  • Stablecoin market capitalisation remained 3.67% below its May record.
  • USDC contracted by approximately $2.08 billion.
  • Average daily stablecoin-pair trading volume on centralised exchanges fell 2.54%.
  • Circulating supply and trading volume do not directly measure payment adoption.

USDC Declines While Other Tokens Grow

According to CoinDesk Research’s October report, Ethereum accounted for roughly $1.91 billion of USDC’s decline.

Tether remained the largest stablecoin at $183 billion, representing 59.9% of the measured market. Elsewhere, USDS grew 3.50% to $6.74 billion, while USDe declined 3.48% to $4.67 billion.

Those movements show why the headline total can conceal changes within individual tokens. Different stablecoin types also use different mechanisms to support their intended value, making them more than interchangeable ticker symbols.

Trading Activity Softens

Average daily trading volume across stablecoin pairs on centralised exchanges declined to $31 billion. The report recorded $619 billion in trading through October 20.

These are exchange-trading figures. They should not be labelled merchant payments, household remittances or money spent on goods and services.

Understanding how stablecoins work helps separate those measures. Market capitalisation describes outstanding value at a point in time; transaction volume measures activity over a period.

The same tokens can change hands repeatedly without an increase in circulating supply. Conversely, additional issuance does not establish that the new tokens financed purchases.

What Payment Businesses Can Take From the Data

For businesses evaluating a crypto wallet for payments, aggregate supply offers market context. Operational decisions still depend on the specific token, supported networks, liquidity and conversion arrangements.

Assessing payment adoption requires evidence identifying payment-related activity and explaining how trading, internal transfers and other movements were excluded.

Conclusion

October’s snapshot shows broadly steady stablecoin supply alongside weaker exchange trading and divergent token balances. It establishes changes in market composition, but cannot independently show how much stablecoin activity represents everyday payments.
