How Much Money Do You Need to Start Cryptocurrency Trading?

This article is intended solely for informational purposes and should not be considered trading or investment advice. Nothing herein should be construed as financial, legal, or tax advice. Trading or investing in cryptocurrencies carries a considerable risk of financial loss. Always conduct due diligence before making any trading or investment decisions.

There is really no single amount you need to start trading cryptocurrency. You can begin with a dollar or with a hundred, and both are possible on venues that publish minimums.

What changes with the number is how large a share of your money the fees take, and whether you can get what is left back out at a sensible cost.

That second half is the part most guides skip. Money goes into a market cheaply and comes out expensively, so budget for the exit before the entry.

Key Takeaways

  • The lowest entry published here is about one unit of currency: Kraken’s Buy Crypto minimum is 1 USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD or CHF, or 110 JPY. A real order book trade costs more, because Kraken’s minimum Bitcoin order is 0.0001 BTC, 8.43 US dollars at CoinGecko’s price of 84,304.29 dollars on 28 September 2026.
  • Trading fees differ by product as well as by venue. Kraken publishes 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at its lowest tier and 1% plus a spread on Instant Buy; Binance 0.100% either side at its entry tier; Coinbase 1% per limit order plus up to a further 1.875% by payment method.
  • Withdrawal charges are flat, so they do not shrink as the stake grows. Coinbase publishes 10 dollars for an incoming US wire and 25 for an outgoing one.
  • There is no single starting figure, because the exit route sets the floor. Work yours out from the withdrawal you will actually use, before you deposit anything.
  • Minimums, fees and eligibility all depend on where you live, so none of the figures below is a promise for your own market.

Factors to Consider When Determining Your Initial Investment

A woman investing in cryptocurrency

Four things shape the amount. Three of them you can measure; the fourth is a judgement only you can make.

Financial Situation

The relevant figure is not your income or your savings. It is the sum you could hand over permanently without changing the month you are in: rent, debt payments, the emergency fund, the bills already scheduled.

Work it out first, then compare it with the minimums below. If it is smaller than the smallest order your venue takes, the venue has answered the question.

Risk Tolerance

Crypto prices move sharply in both directions, and a position can be worth materially less within a day. That is a property of the market, and the drivers are set out in our piece on what influences cryptocurrency price volatility.

What follows is arithmetic rather than temperament. A 30% fall on 50 dollars is 15 dollars and on 5,000 dollars is 1,500. Run the drop you would find hard to absorb backwards through that sum and you have a ceiling you calculated.

Trading Goals

A short holding period and a long one put different pressure on costs, because frequent trading pays the fee schedule repeatedly. Dollar cost averaging is investing a fixed amount at regular intervals regardless of price, as Charles Schwab defines it, and it does not depend on picking a moment.

Market Knowledge and Experience

Familiarity changes which costs you can see. Someone who knows what a maker fee, a taker fee and a spread are reads an order screen differently from someone meeting all three at once, and our guide to reading depth charts covers the order book these minimums refer to.

Minimum Requirements for Crypto Trading

Three things sit between a balance and a first trade: what the venue will accept, what the trade costs, and what it costs to take the proceeds away.

Exchange Minimums

Each venue sets its own floor, and it depends on the product. Kraken publishes both: a Buy Crypto minimum of one unit of USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD or CHF, or 110 JPY, and an order book minimum of 0.0001 BTC or 0.01 ETH, on a support page stamped 18 December 2025.

Coinbase’s help centre does not publish a flat figure: it says minimum purchase amounts vary by crypto or payment method. Binance’s fee schedule does not state a minimum order size, which is a fact about that schedule rather than about Binance.

Transaction Fees

Kraken publishes 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at its lowest volume tier on Kraken Pro, its order book product, and a 1% trading fee on instant and recurring trades, with a spread included in the price shown.

Binance publishes 0.100% maker and 0.100% taker at its entry tier, under 1,000,000 US dollars of 30 day volume with a BNB balance of zero or more. Maker and taker are identical there, so the claim that makers always pay less does not hold at the tier a beginner occupies.

Coinbase charges a separate limit order execution fee equal to 1% of the amount you trade on each limit buy and limit sell, and says it may also charge a 1.875% Coinbase fee that varies by payment method. Its order book tiers sit behind a login and could not be read.

On a 10 dollar trade, pricing no Binance spread because none is quoted on its schedule, no Coinbase spread because it applies to simple buy and sell orders rather than the limit orders priced here, and no discount on either:

Binance’s taker rate takes 1 cent, Kraken’s 8 cents, Coinbase’s limit fee 10 cents, and the payment method fee up to 19 cents more.

Withdrawal Limits and the Cost of Leaving

Venues cap withdrawals over a period, and the cap usually moves with your verification tier. Identity checks are a condition of a regulated venue rather than an obstacle, and our explainer on anti money laundering compliance covers why the tiers exist.

At this size the charge matters more than the cap. Coinbase publishes US wire fees of 10 dollars incoming and 25 outgoing. On chain it publishes no advance figure: network fees rest on its estimate of prevailing rates, disclosed at the time of the transaction.

How Much Money Do You Need to Start Cryptocurrency Trading?

There is no single figure, and that is not a dodge. The floor is set by how you will take the money out again, which differs by venue, country and payment method. So compute it before you enter, in three lines.

  1. The venue’s minimum for the product you will really use. On Kraken’s order book that is 0.0001 BTC, 8.43 dollars at the price above, or 0.01 ETH.
  2. Its fee at the entry tier. Kraken’s is 0.80% taker on the book and 1% plus a spread on Instant Buy, the route a smaller order has to take.
  3. The published cost of the exit you will use. Coinbase’s outgoing US wire is 25 dollars, and on chain there is no advance figure to plan against.

Worked through on Coinbase’s figures, a 20 dollar limit buy costs 20 cents for the 1% execution fee, plus up to 38 cents if the 1.875% payment method fee applies. Wiring the proceeds out of the US costs 25 dollars.

That is about 25.58 dollars against a 20 dollar stake, so the round trip costs more than the position. At 2,500 dollars the same wire is 1%. Your own floor sits between those points.

The entry gate moves too. The 8.43 dollars is a fixed coin minimum times a moving price: 5 dollars at 50,000 a coin, 12 at 120,000, and above about 200,000 it passes 20. The wire fee does not move at all, which is why the exit sets the practical floor.

Starting Small: Pros and Cons

Advantages of Starting Small

  • Limited downside in absolute terms. A fall of any given percentage on a small position is a small number of dollars.
  • Room to learn the mechanics. Order types and withdrawal screens behave the same at 10 dollars or 10,000.
  • Less pressure at the screen. A volatile chart is easier to read calmly when the sum on it is one you had written off, and rash decisions are the expensive kind.

Limitations of Starting Small

The limitation that actually bites is not smaller profits. A percentage fee takes the same share whatever the stake. A flat charge does not, and it is the flat charge that decides whether a small position is worth opening.

  • A 25 dollar outgoing wire against a 20 dollar balance costs more than the balance.
  • Some products are out of reach at small size. Kraken’s 0.0001 BTC order book minimum is a hard gate, and the Instant Buy route that gets round it costs 1% plus a spread.
  • Margin and derivatives are gated by balance on many venues, and by law in some places.

That last point is worth stating precisely. The Financial Conduct Authority banned the sale, marketing and distribution to retail consumers of derivatives and exchange traded notes referencing certain cryptoassets, published 6 October 2020 and effective 6 January 2021. It binds firms acting in, or from, the UK rather than the reader.

Crypto exchange traded notes on a UK recognised investment exchange have been permitted for UK retail since 8 October 2025, and the FCA says in that release its “ban on retail access to cryptoasset derivatives will remain in place”.

Starting Large: Pros and Cons

Advantages of Starting Large

  • Flat charges become a smaller share of the whole. The same 25 dollar wire is 0.25% of 10,000 dollars and 125% of 20 dollars.

Limitations of Starting Large

  • The absolute loss is larger, and this market is volatile enough for that to be a real number.
  • Bigger balances meet more withdrawal friction in general: tiered caps, extra verification, and holds while checks are completed. No venue read here publishes a figure for it.

Additional Costs to Consider Before Deciding

  • Tools and software. Some are free and some are subscriptions; our round up of crypto portfolio trackers sets out what each does.
  • Network fees. Moving coins between wallets costs whatever the chain costs at the time of the transfer, quoted then rather than in advance.

Tips for Beginner Traders

Liquidity and Market Capitalisation

CoinGecko tracked 21,642 cryptocurrencies on 28 September 2026. At a small size the question is not which to pick but which you can enter and exit without moving the price yourself.

Market capitalisation is price times circulating supply; volume is what changed hands. A thin market can look healthy on a chart and cost several percent on the way out.

Use Reputable Exchanges

Look for a venue that publishes its fee schedule where you can read it, states which countries it serves, and shows withdrawal minimums before you deposit. If you cannot find a figure first, treat it as unknown rather than zero.

Check it operates in your jurisdiction, and expect identity verification: a legal requirement for regulated platforms, not a hurdle to work around.

Keep Detailed Records for Tax Purposes

Cryptocurrency transactions are taxable events in many countries, and selling or spending is usually the moment a gain or loss is recognised. The IRS states that “For U.S. tax purposes, digital assets are considered property, not currency”.

Keep the date, amount, price and fees for every trade. Our guide to reporting cryptocurrency income covers what the records are for.

Conclusion

The amount needed varies with individual circumstances, and the published figures narrow it a long way. A dollar buys a position, and about 8.43 dollars reaches Kraken’s order book at today’s price.

What no published figure gives you is your own floor. Work it out from the exit: the charge to take money out is flat and the stake is not.

FAQs

Can you really start crypto trading with one dollar?

On simple buy products, yes. Kraken’s Buy Crypto minimum is one unit of USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD or CHF. You will not reach an order book with it, and you cannot wire it out for less than it is worth.

What is the minimum to place a real Bitcoin trade?

On Kraken an order must be 0.0001 BTC or larger, which was 8.43 US dollars at CoinGecko’s price of 84,304.29 dollars on 28 September 2026. For Ether the minimum order is 0.01 ETH.

How do I work out my own starting figure?

Three lines: the venue’s minimum for the product you will use, its fee at the entry tier, and the published cost of the withdrawal route you will take. If the third is a large share of the first, the stake is too small.

Do I owe tax on a small trade?

Rules differ by country, and a small gain is still a gain. The IRS treats digital assets as property for US tax purposes. In the UK an individual’s capital gains annual exempt amount is 3,000 pounds, with rates of 18% and 24% since 30 October 2024.
